Rarely does an owner seek to draw attention to piping and HVAC ductwork, but this was exactly the goal at the Utah Career Center which is responsible for teaching pipefitting and welding trades. The 33,000 square feet area introduced numerous issues to handle because of the large open space, multi-colored piping, and large HVAC ductwork that needed special attention. The building features a large glass-enclosed mechanical room with RGB LED luminaires illuminating different water pumps, boiler, chiller, and air handler. Different mechanical equipment is illuminated according to its function, providing a teaching tool for students. A LEED Gold project, energy efficiency with interior lighting was of utmost importance. Utilizing efficient fluorescent technology combined with LED lighting, the design is 29% better than state energy requirements. Careful coordination with the architect and owner was performed to ensure the lighting solutions fit within the owner's budget. 35,000 hour rated T5HO lamps were utilized in the hallway and lobby areas with LED lighting used to enhance the lobby architecture and highlight the mechanical equipment in the glass enclosed mechanical room.
